Thailand, officially the Kingdom of
Thailand (Prathet Thai, or “Land of the Free”), country in Southeast
Asia. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been occupied
by any European or other foreign power, except in war. The country was an
absolute monarchy from 1782 until 1932, when rebels seized power in a coup and
established a constitutional monarchy. Since then, Thailand has come under the
rule of many governments, both civil and military. The country was known as
Siam until 1939 (when it was renamed Thailand), and again for a few years in
the late 1940s. In 1949 the name Thailand was adopted a second time.

of Bengal to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the south. Colombo,
situated on the western coast, is the largest city and the commercial capital
of Sri Lanka. The administrative capital is Sri Jayawardenepura (Kotte),
located about 16 km (about 10 mi) east of Colombo.

is now Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 by Abdul
Aziz ibn Saud, and it has been ruled by his descendants ever since.

Singapore, independent republic in Southeast Asia, comprising 1 main
island and about 50 small adjacent islands off the southern tip of the Malay
Peninsula. The main island, Singapore Island, is separated from Malaysia on the

Malaysian city of Johor Baharu. On the south, Singapore Island is separated
from Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago by the Singapore Strait, an important
shipping channel linking the Indian Ocean to the west with the South China Sea
